From software engineering to finance
BaseFour started with a simple observation from someone who came into finance from the other side of the desk. As a software engineer, our founder was used to a world where repetitive work gets automated, data flows through pipelines, and systems explain themselves. Then, working closely with finance, he saw the opposite: talented finance teams manually pulling data from a dozen tools, rebuilding the same fragile spreadsheets every month, and hand-writing the board narrative from scratch.
The gap was obvious. The tooling finance relied on was good at showing what changed but rarely explained why—and almost none of it read directly from the source systems the way a well-built application would. BaseFour is the answer to that: financial reporting treated as engineering infrastructure.
What we build
BaseFour ingests directly from tools like QuickBooks, NetSuite, Stripe and Shopify on a daily refresh. It runs automated price-volume-mix decomposition to explain the causal drivers behind every revenue movement—across channel, product and period—and drafts the board-ready deck for you.
That engineering DNA shows up in how the product behaves: it connects like software, updates automatically, and answers questions in plain language instead of forcing you back into a pivot table. It's especially powerful for multi-channel e-commerce and CPG finance teams whose reporting breaks every time they launch a new SKU or channel.
What we believe
Reporting should explain causes, not just display charts. Finance tools should read from source systems, like software—not from fragile manual exports. Every number should be one a finance leader can stand behind.
Who founded BaseFour?
Software engineer turned finance builder. Nicolas started BaseFour after seeing finance teams do by hand what software should automate, and now leads product and engineering—applying pipelines, automation and AI to financial reporting.
